The Etobicoke Torrent defeated the defending champion Niagara Rapids in the final to win the 2016 Ontario Premier League Title. The Torrent got off to a fast start in the final, winning the first set on all three rinks. Jeff Harding kept the momentum going in the second set to win the singles. Brian Roussie, Hank Spencer, and Steve Miller were back and forth in the second set but pulled ahead in the end to win the triples and clinch the title and avoid a tie-break, as Fred Wallbank and Gary Pickering were trailing their second set against against Jim and Marg Lepere when the championship was clinched.
The Etobicoke Torrent and Niagara Falls Rapids will meet in the 2016 Ontario Premier League Final after knocking off division winners Agincourt Almon and Heritage Heat, respectively, in the 2016 OPL semi-final. Mark Sandford put the Torrent ahead with a sets singles win against Peter Wong. Fred Wallbank and Gary Pickering sealed the deal for Etobicoke with a straight sets win in the pairs. Jeff Harding, Hank Spencer, and Brian Roussie won the first set in the triples and were able to take the second half of the second set off as the win was already clinched. In the other semi-final, the West winners Heritage Heat got off to the early lead with a first set win on all rinks. Mike Wagner struck first for the Heat with a straight sets win over Ryan Stadnyk. The pairs and triples fought back for Niagara, winning the second set and forcing tie-breakers. Jim Lepere and Mike Spadafora took their tie-break 2 - 0 to even the score. Dave Houtby, Jim Roth, and Marg Lepere lost the first end of the tie break but won the next two to clinch the berth in the final.
It was a morning of upsets in the Ontario Premier League playoffs with the third seed in each division defeating the second seed from the opposite division. The Niagara Falls Rapids scored victories in the pairs and triples to overcome Willowdale's early singles lead to advance with a 2 - 1 victory. Jim Lepere and Mike Spadafora took the pairs with Dave Houtby, Jim Roth, and Sue Roth taking the triples. Jesse Wilkinson scored the singles win for Willowdale. The Etobicoke Torrent went the distance to defeat the Milton Mixed Nuts with all three games going to the tie-break. Mark Sandford won singles with a win over John Bezear, while Fred Wallbank and Gary Pickering took the pairs and Jeff Harding, Hank Spencer, and Brian Roussie taking the triples. The Torrent advance to play the Agincourt Almon and the Rapids play the Heritage Heat in the semi finals.
The OPL is pleased to announce that the Milton Lawn Bowling Club will host the grand finals on Saturday, August 27th. The quarter finals will start at 10:00 am with the finals expected to begin around 4:00 pm.
